This safety poster covers essential information and advice relating to Abrasive Wheel Groups and best working practices
This poster states:
THE ABRASIVE WHEEL REGULATIONS 1970 HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY THE PROVISION AND USE OF WORK EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS 1998 (PUWER), PLACING A GREATER EMPHASIS ON THE NEED FOR TRAINING AND WIDENING THE SCOPE OF THOSE WHO NEED TO BE TRAINED.
The PUWER 98 Regulations define the responsibilities of the employer to provide suitable equipment, systems of work and
training to ensure a safe working environment. It also becomes the responsibility of those operating the equipment to ensure that safe procedures are followed at all times.
All people involved in the use of grinding equipment must: Be appointed, trained and considered competent by their employer to use the grinding equipment. Never allow unauthorised people to use their machine; Only use grinding machines and abrasive wheels for the purpose for which they are intended and for which they are suitable; Examine all wheels for damage or defects before mounting; Never use a machine that is not in good working order or one with defective parts; Observe all health and safety procedures and written instructions for the use of that equipment; Fully understand the equipment's? controls, refer to equipment user manual if necessary; Be aware of the likely hazards encountered when operating grinding equipment and the relevant procedures in place to prevent accidents; Wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times. Be aware that work pieces and equipment can become very hot; Never remove or modify guarding fitted to the machine; Follow the correct handling, storage and mounting procedures for abrasive wheels; Prevent accidental start-up of the wheel spindle before mounting or changing a wheel. Isolate all machines from their power source when necessary; Ensure that clamping devices and work rests are secure and properly adjusted so that the work piece is stable before use; Ensure adequate lighting is supplied for the operations being carried out; Ensure that all machine and wheel safety markings and warnings are clearly visible; Never mount a wheel that cannot be fully identified or use a machine which does not indicate its spindle speed; Never exceed the specified maximum operating speed marked on the wheel; Stop wheel rotation before leaving the machine. Never leave the wheel to run on an unattended machine; Report all accidents, including wheel breakage.
